For example Stephen Spieldberg is one of the greatest film directors in the world, Marradona is one of the greatest football players of all time...even if you didn't like Spieldberg or Maradona you can still accept the reasons their rated so highly

Greatest footballer or greatest film director is a lot more specific. They are also entertainers, for starters. Although only entertainers to people who are interested in football, or like those particular types of films.
EDIT: I also think that the end of Minority Report (film adaptation by Speilberg) was pants.

The FACT that he was a paedophile and a weirdo probably gave him more entertainment value than his pop singing.
I also don't agree that it is a matter of opinion......all the classical composers were far better entertainers for a start. [that's if we stick to music] Then you could say people like Muhammad Ali were far greater entertainers - there are thousands, probably millions of REAL entertainers that are ahead of Jackson.
