wo8uold it be possible to have WAP pages that allow me to play
games when i'm away from my computer?

even if it just gave the FEN or a simple text view of the board and
allowed my to enter a move in longhand algebraic.

This would allow me and other people with modern mobile phones
(cellphones to the americans here) to play in 1 day timeout
tournemants!!

This doesn't require any server changes just php/asp/cgi/whatever
output to create WML instead of HTML where appropriate...

Just an idea!!

I would do this, but when I worked for a big dot com in the past, we
adopted WAP - and the audience was almost nil. A real shame, as it
would be quite cool - but the WAP interface is just horrible.

What I am about to do is write some tools (xml access) which would
allow anyone else to write this kind of thing if they wanted. Hell, I
might even do it myself!

only problem is that in britian it is 10p per min for WAP. making 5
moves could cost you a few £s, so this could be a down for some ppl.

GSM connections are charged by time. GSM 'holds' the line all the time
from beginning to the end of a connection. As opposed to GPRS is
used on a shared-use, as-packets-are-needed basis rather than
dedicated only to one user at a time.

In short, if you've got a GPRS phone you will be charged by the
amount of trasferred bytes regardless of time even in Britain but I'm
not sure about the US they are in a kind of 'Stoneage stage' when it
comes to 'cells'.
