English is currently the richest, most diverse language on the planet. No other language is currently used to such a wide and varied extent.

Are you kidding me? It's widely used because of the Anglo-Saxon economic and military dominance. This is absolutely immaterial to how "rich" English is. And that economic prevalence is why I learned English.

Even if people had chosen English because other considerations, your argument would still be an ad populum.

This wide range of nationalities and cultures that use English have made it what it is: the only truly global lingua franca.
Most use English only on the rare occasion. The proportion of people that work in English is still pretty much contained to those that live in English speaking countries plus a small minority. And even a significant proportion of those live in communities that use other languages between them.

I find it interesting that your only response to the comment that English is a beautiful and expressive language is to cry 'English superiority' and to point out that most English speakers only speak English.
Ha! More argument twisting. The issue here is not that English is a beautiful and expressive language. I agree with that. To make the jump from there to "the most" is where you've been brainwashed. It's similar to someone arguing about the qualities of a band that make it "the greatest of all time". Absolute nonsense, with the important difference that it reeks of parochial nacionalistic propaganda.

Edit - And I have no chip. I love many countries and many languages. English is one of those.

Children, children,

Let's just say: "English is one of the richest languages we can speak."

That way we're all happy and content.

I'm sorry about war and famine. I should have talked my Father out of it, but he loves having someone new to roast.

Now I'm off to the pub to weep.
You know, I liked this post so much I adapted it (for suitability of language) and turned it into a reading comprehension for some of my students today.

Thanks, Shav.

what? what do you mean "because of the Anglo-Saxon dominance"? That is complete nonsense, the reason english spread so rapidly was because of the British Empire (this is common knowledge); though after ww2 it is the usa that has pushed it further... this has nothing to do with anglo-saxon dominance, this would have been a german dialect brought to the british isles, a form of english was developed from this, they did not bring english with them!

I quote "Most use English on the rare occasion"... do you live in a cave? English is the first language used in business and entertainment, it is considered the official language of the world.

Once again I quote, "English is still pretty much contained to those that live in Enligsh speaking countries plus a small minority".... what? Is not canada and the usa slightly bigger than a small minority?

You imply, "English is a beautiful language"...

English is not a beautiful language, Latin is beautiful.

Hey, Shav, take heart. Yours truly still carries around a tomato soup

can trailing a length of yarn... even when he takes the special bus to

fetch groceries. You hang in there, Sunshine. You're freakin special!

Does that really work?
Can you really tie two cans to a piece of string and talk to each other over, say, a kilometre?
