I have a contract upgrade coming up and need a business phone.
I'm thinking Blackberry 9500 Storm. Has anyone here used it? I've seen the Bold in action and it's a great communication device.

I can get the iPhone on a good deal now, but it just seems like a gimmicky phone next to the Storm...

You guys have been a great help 😞

I've seen the iPhone in action and it's got awesome gimmicks, and awesome gimmicky apps, but is there anything actually useful about the phone?

Unless you're getting the 3G version, don't bother.

How about the Nokia N97 instead?

What do you mean by useful? It does everything I can imagine you'd want it to do.

* Makes and receives phone calls
* Text messaging
* Internet access
* Email
* Useful/fun applications
* Movies/TV shows
* Download music
* Play music/audiobooks
* Daily calendar
* Camera

What else would you need it to do?

Well you can make calls with it, so there's that...

I've got a gen 1, so mine's not as gimmicky as most. Mostly I just like having a good web browser and email client available anywhere I go. The maps function is also pretty useful. Probably even more-so if you get a later model with GPS. The rest is just fluff to me. Pretty fluff, but fluff.

It seems like most smart-phones have similar features these days (full-browser, touch-screen), so I'd guess it's just a matter of preference. I'd actually be interested to hear if there's anything that sets one ahead of the rest, from a functional point of view. Is there anything the Storm will do that the iPhone or G1 won't?

The things I saw tonight on the BB Bold that basically sold me was the seamless email and contacts synchronization, the push email and instant messaging (supported by an unlimited data plan on my network) and multiple apps open at the same time.
Also, apparently the Storm ClickThrough touch screen kicks the iPhone keyboard's ass.

I've already requested the iPhone, but have to wait as the thing's on back-order, so I'd just like to be sure about this switch if I tell them to cancel...

The G1 I know nothing about. Is it the Android based phone?

From what I've seen, the BlackBerry does everything you list, and does most 'better', except the insane amount of great apps for the iPhone.

No WiFi on the Storm, but we don't have so much free WiFi here that it makes a difference.
Bluetooth for anything on the Storm, plus expandability through mSD.

Plus, I absolutely HATE iTunes...

Wow, that looks like a sweet phone. I'll always be a Nokia fan.

Seems my network doesn't sell it yet.

Yeah, the G1 is an Android phone. I haven't had a real chance to play with one yet. Seemed like an unsexy iPhone from what little I saw. It also rides on a pretty crappy carrier here in the US. I am a fan of the idea behind it, though. It's a shame it hasn't taken off.

As for the functions, I get the contacts sync (which the iPhone also does), but what would email sync be? Assuming you have a true mail client on the phone, which I think both do, doesn't that do the trick by itself? I think the iPhone has this as well, but I never understood why I'd want it.

I did get a chance to use the ClickThrough on a Storm for a minute and it does seem like a much better keyboard interface. My problem with typing on the iPhone has always been not being sure which key I'm hitting until it's all ready typed. Separating the highlighting from the clicking did seem to work much better.

I have the storm. There's a little bit of a learning curve, and I still don't take advantages of all its bells and whistles, but I do love it. The only think I don't like is that it actually doesn't fit well into a pants pocket (which my previous phones did). I highly recommend it and if you need any help, holler.

One more phone to look at might be the Palm Pre. Despite coming from Palm. people really seem to like this phone. Probably worth a look before you commit to one of the others.
