Dear all,
I don' know how you feel about threads constantly being closed here, but I am starting to get annoyed by this...
Sure this isn't a 18+ site and I am aware that some teenagers as well as a fair few children play chess here (Which I welcome very much - the future belongs to them ;-)...
But why is it, that every-time a thread gets heated or controversial, it gets closed by T1000 - I would really be interested in knowing what the criteria for these decisions are, as it feels not right to me closing threads...
Anyone got any thoughts, idea, advice, knowledge on this matter - Please post
Freedom of speech !!!
Regards
Boris
i agree...my post was moderated yet was read by millions as it was a quote from the guardian. funnily enough as far as i'm aware there weren't any complaints made to this hugely popular newspaper but it was very unpopular with some person (s) here and the whole thing disappeared. Freedom of Speech....yeah whatever!!

Originally posted by The Slow PawnMy guess is that it has to do with profanity. I have certainly made a few controversial posts in my time, but because I never use any profanity I don't think I've ever had one moderated. Threads that degenerate into nothing but name calling, with no other point, also seem to get moderated quickly.

It might help if the moderators clearly posted what types of things are guaranteed to get you moderated.
Debates
Potentially heated discussions on topics such as religion, politics and other such areas of interest
How can these "heated discussions" actually get that heated if they are modded out? I thought the debates forum was supposedly a bit more tolerant than the other forums 😕

Perhaps you would like to provide evidence to back up your claim that every time a thread gets heated or controversial I close it? I have closed less than 5 threads in the last three months. That's not really the same as "every time a thread gets heated or controversial, it gets closed by T1000", is it? Have you and Paulie read the threads in the debates forum? To my mind there is plenty of heated discussion there.

The skeeter marriage thread was closed because it had long since run its course and IMO was degrading into abusive posting. The thread originator wished to see it closed, at least two other users wished to see it closed before I did so and a further user messaged me to say thanks for closing it after I had done so.
If the thread had been left open there would be those who would have complained. If the thread had been closed there would be those who would have complained. That may be something worth considering.
As for wucky3's post I am unsure of the details (eg content of the post etc). It wasn't me who hid it and I don't know who did. Wucky3, did you attempt to contact any of the moderators when the post was hidden?
T1000
yes..i was contacted by someone who told me why this had happened with my post but was still pretty baffled to how something that published in the weekend guardian could be moderated on rhp because one person took offence to a light hearted comment rather than debate about it which i thought was the point of the debates forum. hell, if i reported everything i didn't agree with in the debate forum you mods would be sick to death of me.
Perhaps if you were genuinely concerned you could have sent T1000 a personal message instead of making false accusations in the forum? What accusations - and false ???
Anyway, I appreciated your feedback and the fact that I know now that in order for a thread to be closed, it has to have several people complaining - good to know that point -
I don't participate in the 'debates' forum, hence cannot give a statement. And the fact that you closed less then 5 threads within the last 3 months was not known to me, only the fact that 3 threads I participated in were closed, hence my initial post

PS: I know now that it's not an easy job to be a thread moderator, as you have to carefully negotiate between clan members and either way you decide will always make some people happy and some not (and I was just unlucky on three occasions) ...
Nevertheless if I had to say, I would not close any threads at all as it is an intervention against 'freedom of speech' which should be remained by all means
When my post was closed T1000 had the politeness to inform me , as far as I know only one lady complained about my thread, it liinked to a page showing a few breasts! That's life - I agree that the mods have too much power, they choose to be selective - but life is too short, lets not shoot the messenger.
Mike 🙄
Keep up the good work Mark, maybe you are getting stick as you have the guts put your name down when you feel the need to close a thread. If you have been here a long time you will be greatful that things are kept in check these days.
If you post here a lot eventually we all have the odd post moderated that makes no sense. I once made a tounge in cheek comment about what would happen if the Americans accidently shot down Santa as he was delivering presents to the Afganistani children. Well that was offensive enough at the time to be moderated away.

And they are false. Hence my comment about accusations and falsehood.

"And the fact that you closed less then 5 threads within the last 3 months was not known to me". To be fair, that didn't stop you from proclaiming that threads are constantly being closed and that everytime a thread gets heated or controversial it is me who closes it.
That said, thanks for your other comments. Any time that you want feedback on moderation issues, if you send me a personal message then I will reply. Alternatively, message Russ.
Re: your final sentence. As discussed in a thread with SirLoseALot about a month ago, the point of view of all individual users is considered. In this case though, Russ and Chrismo believe differently from your "I would not close any threads at all" stance, the current moderators believe differently, and other users of the site believe differently. Clearly not everyone does, but it is impossible to please all the people all of the time.
