Who here plays Vice City? Quake 3? Red Faction? Half Life? Then you should know about mods.

MOds aren't always people who scan websites looking for inappropriate words 😉. Mods are modifications on computer games, and are usually available to download off a website (exception for CS).

I am hoping to recruit some people, because I need some help! I am looking for a few good men to help with a Red Faction mod. I will need help in the areas of Milkshape 3D, RED and any mesh creation.

So people don't steal my idea, the mod will remain confidential until someone contacts me.

Post in this thread, I shall PM you with my email. Then, communtication shall proceed from there.

Many Thanks,
Andrew.

The way I see it, 'patches' are minor updates from the original company to fix bugs or make small changes. If you call up a technical support line for something, the first thing they'll tell you is to "download the latest patch".

'Mods' tend to be 3rd-party things that change something about a game (eg the graphics, the weapons etc). The most extensive mods are 'total conversions', where everything is redrawn, renamed etc to make what looks like a new game; in fact some retail games are effectively mods of existing games. 'Official' mods are often called 'expansion packs' (or if it's a particularly lazy company, 'sequels' 😠).

AFAIK, the most successful mod ever is 'Counterstrike' for Half-life, which is now far more popular than the game it was based on. These days there are even international tournaments in Counterstrike.

Why did I just type this? Why do you think?

You got it! I used to make mods for all the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series! Weapons/missions/Multi-player maps....good stuff! 😀 I know about red faction though!

I have used mods quite a bit (And I have enormous respect to the professional efforts that some of those guys put together). My modding efforts stopped after making a Quake 3 mod where the shotgun fired rockets. And that was hard enough - which is why I'm pleased the Counter Strike guys have got the recognition they deserve. (I’m an ex-addict, from about Beta 5).

I'm still rubbish at it though. In fact, I bought it for the Xbox the other day - to help send a bit of cash back to the authors (hopefully) - and I haven’t improved with time.

Well, just send us a PM if you want in on a mod for Q3A, Red Faction, AvP2 or BF:1942 (started to tinker around with that a bit...hard to learn.)
