I think that was a typo, he did mean to say C#, I'm quite sure. Otherwise he must be very confused. A year ago, did I hear a rumour that a Dx9 API would be provided for C#?

Now, I don't know about you, but that gets me going.... 😀

Yan,

For a feeble-minded 17 year old like myself, who has only taken the AP C++ class, programming any games can be a bit tedious. I am not in college or anything like that for computers (yet 😀) so I don't know that much source. My knowledge of the language limits me to making game boards out of matrices and such. 😀 I would look at the source for quake 2 but I wouldn't be able to comprehend much. 🙂 Sorry to cause a bit of confusion!

I do have a spare copy of Visual C# .Net that you could probably have for a small donation. [It has been spare since MS sent me the whole Studio product]

As for books, every time I start learning a new technology, the first thing I do is get any decent O'Reilly books on the subject. [For C#, do not buy the Nutshell book, because the Microsoft Development IDE is soooo good, it makes it redundant.]

Anyway, books I would recommend :

Firstly:
Programming C#
Jesse Liberty
Paperback 648 pages (8 March, 2002)
and..
Paperback - 30 May, 2003
Publisher: O'Reilly

And if you are interested in Windows programming, the Guru himself :

Programming Windows with C#
C. Petzold
Hardcover - 1 December, 2001

If you are going to buys any good books form Amazon, please can you use the links off the 'shop' menu. I get a few cents off each purchase, not that I have ever had a check in 2 years, mind you. 🙂

Thanks!

I can recommend any of the books on C# by Deitel and Deitel - I was a technical reviewer for them all (also their C++ books which are very good too).

If you get the latest Visual Studio .NET 2003 Developer Edition then I think we've just dropped the price to $49.95 instead of several hundred $.

I agree with you chewie I own a book by Deitel & Deitel for Java and it's very good! They're touching almost everything essential to learn the language. Only one negative point though, they start to talk about swing right away... which I don't think is the best thing to do... just my humble opinion. 🙂

50$ for visual studio .NET!! that's cheap! 😲

If it's really what he meant, that's a deal!! 😲

By the way chewie, I looked at your web site www.microsoft.com for the price of visual studio .net 2003:

professionnal --> $1,079 US
enterprise developper --> $1,799 US
enterprise architect --> $2,499 US

I'll be grateful if you can tell me where I can find a 49.95$ copy!

My apologies - I misremembered the marketing blurb I read. I think its the next version of SQL Server will have a $50 developer edition.😳

There I was thinking Rip Off Britain was getting another bad deal - I could only find an upgrade for £300 - and that is not quite the same thing, or $49! 😉

Pleased we cleared that one up!

there was some 'super deal' about for 2003 .net upgrade recently: thus our subscription copies were delayed by a good month due to the high volumes being demanded. Or so i heard in the coffee room. Me, I just turn on visual studio and go. Or is that my shampoo?

I've found a nice free IDE for developing .net applications (c# and VB .net)! If anyone interested there's the url: http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/

p.s. Tony if you're interested I still have some old c++ school work... Let me know if you want it!
