The first one was called Ball of Fire from 1941 and right after that on this movie channel was a remake from 1948 called 'A Song is Born'.
Basically the same movie, same director, in the first one there was a bunch of college professors and a love interest, in the second, starred Danny Kay but the college professors in this one were musicians and they were studying the history of music and the protaganist sees these two black guys take a tune from Edward Grieg and turn it into a boogie woogie piano riff, so Kay goes to Jazz clubs and the musicians were playing themselves, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Mel Powell, Lionel Hampton on vibes, Benny Goodman plays one of the professors and just wailed on the clarinet, There were some great jam session scenes where these guys who would never have played together were all in the same room playing together. Gene Krupa on drums. A tour de force of Jazz. Amazing movie.

I've been collecting old classics on DVD recently..my fave being Jimmy Cagney films. I'm having trouble getting yankee doodle dandy though. apparently they don't do it for region 2.
the old ones are definately the best

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe" and "Philadelphia Story" are two old classics worth owning.

Ditto on Hitchcock: "North By Northwest," "Vertigo," "Notorius," and "Lifeboat," are all worth owning.'

I'm partial to Errol Flynn's "Captain Blood," "The Sea Hawk," and "The Adventures of Robin Hood."

I saw some of 'A Song is Born' on TV once (not sure which version, and I didn't know what it was called at the time). I agree, those jam sessions with the professors and the jazz dudes are amazing - you really can see how much they are enjoying it. I'll have to check it out now I know what it is called.

Right, bought it on eBay for £12.11 including postage. I think that's worth it. Only available on video.
