Originally posted by richjohnsonI work at the airport in Portland. We could see it from the tarmac... Not too terribly spectactular a steam cloud that looked like any other cloud and a bit of ash. Certainly more of a burp than a burst like last time.
just erupted again. (not that big this time).

Did anyone out there see it live?
Can any of our other community members share their thoughts and memories on the the first time she erupted?
At that time I was a college kid attending Montana State University in Bozeman Mt. Due to the health hazards the entire town along with a number of the surrounding communities were shut down and all were cautioned to stay indoors. I remember when the ash cloud drifted over the street lights came on. It took about a day (basically overnight) for the ash cloud to arrive. We heard the news in advance and planned accordingly. In the end we were trapped indoors with an keg of beer and had a Jimmy Buffet themed party. "I don't know when the volcano blows..." Great fun
Originally posted by Frank BurnsI was five years old when it went blew in 1980. We lived in Salem, Oregon. I recall having to stay indoors during the eruption, which was frustrating since I wanted to be outside, playing with my friends. Our neighborhood got a thin 'snowfall' of ash from the volcano. That's all I recall, except that years later (in Cincinnati, OH) I did a report in second grade about volcanoes. I had a jar of Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash for a visual aid.
