Here in New England you can use it for both genders, not sure if it is the same anywere else.

Yeah, but would you talk about "sweet guys" when talking about one guy and one gal?

Here you wouldn't use "guy" at all. If you walk into a party, you could say something like "hei, folkens".

Works that way where I live too!

Maybe at the North Pole your supposed to say something like "Hi Guys and Dolls, Elves and Reindeer and a very fine evening Mr. & Mrs. Claus."
