I just found out the most recent fire, the one that just killed three firefighters started in the town my mom lives in and I can't get anyone to answer the phones there, home or cell. Not sure who I can call to find out whats going on.

The county has set up a number for victims of the fire: (800) 398-9931. You might start with that. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

EDIT: Sorry, I think that number was for a previous fire emergency. It doesn't seem to be working.

I went through about 9 numbers before I got a number of a community center that actually was taking refugees, but then I finally got through to the house, parents had just been out for the day. The fire started about 1/4 mile from their house. It was arson. So far, 4 dead. The fire is only 15% contained, 85% wild. The fire raced away from my parents house and went over the mountains but I am worried it will backtrack around following fresh fuel. Well everyone knows about it and you can be sure they are all keeping a close eye on its path. If they ever get the dude, they should throw him in the middle of it.

I had nothing to say last night, I didn't want to drop a "best wishes" on you. I'm glad reading this update that your family is safe. Why anyone in CA would even light a match near a leaf is beyond my reasoning considering all the fires they get in CA. I also hope they find the arson. Is there any news to read on how they figured out it was arson?

Glad things are ok.

I wonder if any mice died in it.

God, I hope not. Innocent creatures don't deserve to be burned alive.

What if they were guilty mice? Would you condone their combustion then?

The fire started on a plains area between my mom's house and the mountains to the north in Cabazon. They presumably found stuff like cans with oil or gasoline residue and maybe matches or lighter, the regular stuff left by arsonists, especially those who want to give a big hint it was arson and then come back to watch the carnage. These kind of dudes don't just fade into the woodwork, they are sometimes on the front lines supposedly to help out as best they can.

Only if they were already deceased by the time their little mousey cadavers came near the heat of the flames.

So what methods of death are appropriate for guilty mice then? Is there a humane way of cutting short their meager tangled skeins?

My best wishes and hopes for your mother. My mother recently went through a fire similar to that in Montana. Keep us posted. I'm sure we all want only to hear good news on this hateful crime. What the hell is wrong with the people out there?

Something like this happened to us when we lived in Israel. We lived in Jerusalem by the old city and were in view of a place on the Israeli side called the Peace Forest, where Israeli's go from time to time and plant new trees. Well someone, actually, several someone's, tried to set fire to the peace forest but something interesting happened. The trees refused to burn. Apparently the trees were of a species, I forget which one now, that is very difficult to set ablaze. The fire department found widely separated starter fires, maybe 5 separate ones but they all sputtered out. We were happy to see that, I went into the forest to see the evidence and they were right, several places separated by a couple hundred meters had sticks mounted like campfires right under the trees but it totally failed to catch. Trees, 1. Arsonist's, 0.
