There's no time limit before you have to pay. As a non-paying member, you can only play six games at the time and you can't join clans, enter sieges or tournaments. But those are about the only limitations there are.

I think a yearly subscription is about 30 US dollars, at the moment, and monthly subscriptions are available too. A pretty good deal, considering what you get for it and compared to the subscription rates at other chess sites.

Your free membership never expires, but if you want more than 6 games at a time, or want tournaments, clans, etc. then the link with information on subscribing is at the bottom of the page, or click on the star next to anyone's name.
The monthly rate isn't exactly a bargain, in my opinion.
