Just as a matter of record, a good friend of mine (and a friend of a number of like-minded people on this site) died last week at the silly age of 37.
He will be missed greatly, by a surprisingly large number of people.
I am so sorry for your loss, and the loss of a good person.

As another of Nick's friends and colleagues, I'd like to confirm just how much he is missed. There is still an air of numbed disbelief in the office. Nick was one of that rare breed of techies - he knew his subject so well that he didn't feel the need to belittle those who didn't. He was generous, had an encyclopaedic knowledge of rock, pop and film and was a keen fisherman. He started playing here about three months ago because he wanted to improve his chess and, while Ivan is right in saying he wasn't brilliant, he was getting better.
On Friday many of us will "down tools" again as we take part in his funeral.
