A recent graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from a major university told me he never read any Nietzche. This kid majored in Philosophy, and graduated without ever having been assigned to read any Nietzche. This baffles me. Given that some of Nietzche's criticism is aimed at the discipline of Philosophy and the prejudices of philosophers, how can he be overlooked in a general Philosophy curriculum? Is this just an isolated incident, or is Nietzche widely ignored in academia?

Originally posted by WulebgrWell, the school in question is a not a bad school. Not the best, but a nationally recognized university anyhow, and yes, it makes me wonder about it's academic standards. I just can't imagine getting a philosophy degree without having ever even brushed up against Nietzche. What I find really interesting is that the kid read lots of Kant. Nietzche rips Kant a new one in _Beyond Good and Evil_. So I'm wondering if philosophy curriculums ignore Nietzche because he criticises their pet philosophers? but I only have "evidence" of this one graduates testimony... so I'm wondering if this is common, or an outlier.
