i went to see my daughter's English teacher a while back.
during the consultation i enquired about my daughters spelling being worse than my other daughter's spelling(who is 5 years younger)
the teacher then said in a condescending attitude. "spelling is not that important." AM I HEARING THINGS. DID THAT ACTUALLY TAKE PLACE. AM I CRACKING UP."😲

Maybe the teacher was from the USA?

Well, if it was her Gym teacher, then yeah...spelling isn't all that important. Learning to whack people with a hockey stick gets priority.

Enforcing spelling conventions stifles the child's creativity! 🙄

But, surely, one needs borders and bounderies to break to be creative?
Which means the spelling conventions have to be taught first, before the child can learn to be creative with them!

learning to drive a car safely can hinder creative driving.
learning how to walk can hinder creative mobility.
learning how to spell can hinder creative writing like the following

I know. What I posted is the mentality that is driving the current educational program in New Zealand. Teachers won't correct spelling mistakes and out right encourage phonetic spelling. It's ridiculous and it leads to me getting emails from people two or three years younger than me like:

"I wud like 2 bok me 4 the event how much is it??"

I told her she wasn't welcome anywhere I was. Jesus Wept (to steal a phrase).

i ask myself, will she (the teacher) send a letter to all employers telling them spelling does not matter. i am sure it would limit the sort of work my daughter would be able to get employment for.

i am sorry for changing your message via the auto spell checker

My youngest daughter will graduate from college next spring.
She is a product of the "whole language" concept of teaching.
She graduated from both middle and high school near the top of her class. She has been on the dean's list several times in college. Most of her teachers simply adore her because of her wonderful personality (she didn't get that from me!).
She can read, but her writing and speaking skills are atrocious.

Guess what her chosen profession is?

Yep, a teacher.

What grade is she in? K and first grade teachers hold to this, but from second grade on, invented spelling is not acceptable except by teachers who are part of the Children First generation. This is the generation of parents and teachers who don't believe in standards or consequences. Yes, they do teach nonsense in education courses, but intelligent people don't take them seriously.

Want to know how much time I spent hearing *Children are a community of learners* and *children should help make the rules so they'll feel ownership and want to follow them* and *children should help set the curriculum and follow their own interests in learning.* Balderdash. But I was older when I went back to school.
