This premise is incorrect. becoming like your enemy or, preferably, better than them is the basis of most competitions. Foot races, debates, boxing, misc sports, etc... Your statement implies that by adopting tactics and skills displayed by a vaunted foe, I'd be unable to defeat them. This simply isn't a true statement.
