obstreperous \ub-STREP-ur-us; ob-\, adjective:
1. Noisily and stubbornly defiant; unruly.
2. Noisy, clamorous, or boisterous.

How do i stop my dog from digging in my garden??
p.s. Violence does and any form of psychological intimidation, to date, has not worked.

Dig with him/her. Once the feeling of naughtiness and going behind your back has subsided your canine companion will lose interest.

Only problem with that is that he/she will then just move on to something else. Chasing sheep is a favourite of my Boosley.

I suppose paving the garden is out of the question?

Do ya not think that digging with him could possibly be sending the message that,"Wow,this really is fun! Thanks for teaching me this great new sport boy!" and he may feel that he has to dig even bigger holes to compete against his new rival??

nope...paving would only be admitting defeat!

Stay positive! - the hole could be turned into a pond or some other such luvverly water feature 😉

Seriously though, is he trying to bury things or, as with my dog, is he digging for the sheer joie de vivre of it all?

Usually in these matters the digging - or whatever the activity - is the result of something else, something dun dun der more deeply rooted in the dog's psyche (grrr that's what one gets for having a psychologist as a girlfriend). Perhaps the dog (what's his name?) is bored or after some exercise? Perhaps the dog is trying to attract your attention, asking you to come out and play with him. Hmmm...I'm not being mucho helpio.

Edit: Just had another thought - this time potentially useful! It may help to do some training with the dog, training that is seemingly unrelated to digging, like teaching him to fetch and retrieve. It could establish a sort of authoratitive relationship (but not authoritarian) which might help him leave behind his love of digging.

In some cultures, it is not considered out of the ordinary to eat dogs.

The Culprit: Winston.

I think what he does is...i take him for a walk, he comes home, jumps in the pool and then proceeds to dig out of pure joy.

I have tried to stop taking him for walks, then he simply rips up anything he can get his mouth around.

Perhaps training...

And I am aware that in some places it is customary to eat chicken.

I am feeling sympathy for you. My back yard looks like the movie "Caddy Shack" and "Saving Private Ryan" all rolled into one. No gophers or artillary, but my dog Zabu has "double pawedly" 😀 turned the yard into a swiss cheese looking thing over the last 9 years. I just look at it and smile and ask her if she's having fun. She always grins and wags her tail, so i guess that is what good training can do for my yard. .... Hmmmm... Swiss Cheese... Chicken.... maybe i'll go make a sandwich and share it with the dog.

That's right. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. How about that game I asked you for?

You just want to boost your rating! Ok. I'm getting whupped by three different players right now. I guess a fourth won't make any difference. I was getting way too much work done anyway. I'll send you one if i can figure how to do it. Never done it before.🙄

You're a popular guy...never actually had to challenge anyone 😉. Go to "New Game", and "challenge player", and the rest is self-explanatory for an accomplished software developer.

Yea, right. I can't walk and chew gum without choking up or getting bruised. Besides, all programmers hate using stuff others have written. Makes us feel inferior.😲
