In one of my games my opponent, a strong player, blundered his queen away. To me it looked like he played the move he was planning right after the queen exchange, meanwhile forgetting to actually doing that move and forgot to check before submitting the move.
The next move he came with this comment:
I am surprized with my previous move... I remember very well that I captured your queen from my queen. dunno what is wrong?? Shall we start a new game??Pls. Together with this comment he offered a draw.
I am rated just over 1800, my opponent just over 1650, the game is rated. If I accept I lose some points.

Questions:
How would you react?
Accept or not?
Other thoughts about this?

If I'd have been given a draw every time I made a blunder (whether through my own stupidity or through the occasional 'trial move acceptance' bug) I would be rated in the 1500's by now 😉
I don't really think it's fair to ask for a draw.. your opponet should just put it down to experience and re-challenge you.

Otto, you should politely decline. He had plenty of time to check his move before making it, so he has only himself to blame for his blunder.
He should not have made the draw offer in the first place.

I played a very strong player once.Wont mention any names, but he was no.1 for a long time until he resigned his games in order for him to drop out of the top 20.some of you will know who I am talking about.Anyway,he lost his queen early in the game and.......had a great laugh about it and asked whether he should resign,I told him to carry on as I had a lot to learn from him.I think he was rated around 1900-2000 at the time and my rating must have been aroound 1300.

What about the player rated just below the 1650 player, would a draw be fair towards him?

Just my thought on the matter.

He shouldn't have put you in this postion in the first place. It's not like he was in trouble with the clock. If you did give him a draw, he'd gain points...for making a mistake. That doesn't seem quite fair, does it?

Thank you all for your reactions!

I agree with you, Bennett.
I felt very uncomfortable when this happened.

One quick note which I may or may not have mentioned here on the forums before...
I was playing a closely contested game against chessh. I came across some "bug" where the move made was not the move "I made" I was certain it wasn't a case of me clicking improperly (perhaps I was wrong, but I don't think so) In any case, I told him what happened and sheepeshly asked if we could each take back our last move so I could make my intended move again. I told him that I knew it was a bizarre request and would completely understand if he declined. He graciously accepted.

Now perhaps I should not have asked in the first place. But I learned something about chessh that day.

Just my 2 cents.

Franklin, Yes some bugs do come up once in a while. I remember a game a long time ago. My king was mated and I was able to play on. Then I actually lost my king and was still able to play. Move after that I resigned knowing it was a progam glitch. Cheers. 😀

LOL, but why John? At that point you had become invincible! Never say 'die' says I; you should have continued on.

In response to the original question - I made a similar error playing against Smokydoo - I was playing 15 games very actively, and he made a move that proposed a knight trade - since I was so active I neglected to take his knight afterwards because I had forgotten the trade in playing my other games, and gave him a winning advantage. While it's a tough break, I learned two things from that move - number one - always pay close attention before making your moves! Number two - I'm only able to intelligently play about 9 or 10 games simultaneously. So your opponent could think of it that way. Careless moves are as much a part of chess as brilliant moves, it's the people who are able to learn from them who go on to become better players. 🙂

I believe that Fexkorn may have been speaking about a game he had with me. GameID = 152565. When he proposed the 'taking back' of his move I thought of a number of things before agreeing.

1. His statement to me about the weird move made sense because when it happened I even thought it was strange.

2. I believed him.

So if your gut feeling says that it was a true blunder then ignore the draw and play on. He did not state that it was a glitch. Besides, I think we have all lost games because we we playing too many games, lost track of what we were doing, and moved too quickly. Bryan
