On a warm summers evenin on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin out the window at the darkness
til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.
He said, son, Ive made a life out of readin peoples faces,
And knowin what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you dont mind my sayin, I can see youre out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey Ill give you some advice.
So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if youre gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.
You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.
Now evry gambler knows that the secret to survivin
Is knowin what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
cause evry hands a winner and evry hands a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.
So when hed finished speakin, he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.
You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.
You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count you r money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done

Any tips on playing ?
1. Ask if red cards are worth more than black cards.
2. Several times during a hand say, "Are two pair worth more than 3-of-a-kind or is it the other way around?"
3. When it is your turn to bet declare, "GO FISH!"
4. Ask if anyone wants to play 52 card pick-up.
5. See if it is ok to bet your wife or automobile.
6. Tell the table, "Look, my Queens are kissing each other! That's hot!"

Originally posted by huckleberryhoundYeah, but "getting your funds up" on a low value table means playing for 2 hours and winning $1.42. You gotta bet big to win big.

If you're going to play cash tables then a good rule of thumb is to always to buy in at least 20 times the big blind. That way you have a nice buffer to accommodate losses and give you enough chips to take people to the cleaners when you hit a decent hand.
Originally posted by Daemon SinI'm a novice here. I only decided to give it a bash, after watching late night poker on TV. Do you think big table are really the place i ought to be ? I don't fancy being the resident patzer with my own money....how much do you think i should play with in a game ?

I started about 3 months ago on a different site with the advice "bet on less hands that you think you should!" ringing in my ears. It's pretty good advice. I started at the $0.05/$0.10 tables am now confident enough to play at the shady heights of $5/$10 tables now so should be rich in about 40 years!
