All but three of the top 20 players are pawnstars. That ain't bad. There are three kinds of players on the site: those who study the theory of the game and are incredibly good. Those who enjoy playing in bulk (Rhymester and the like) and the great masses who are just average. Kirk

My rating is so low because I had about 30-40 games that I lost on time out when i went back to university and suddenly found i didn't have the time to play them. Now my aim is to get my rating up to a respectable level, though this might take a while

in addition, there is no doubt a strong temptation for a non-pawn star to simply open a new account if their rating falls much below 1200. After all, a new start is free and until they're a pawn star, they've nothing to lose except a screen name.
