Originally posted by Bosse de NageI think that's the point. IMO they're following on from what they started in Californication, i.e. a satirical look at the state of things. However, since Flea's a dad and they've all got clean, they're losing the raw energy they used to trade on, and despite the attempt to look at the industry/America etc. from a 'we've been there and seen that and we're gonna take the piss out of you' stance, they're sounding remarkable accessible and not nearly as sharp as they used to be. Having said that, I saw them on Music4: Later and they have lost none of their passion for performing live. Maybe they're just getting a bit old and long in the tooth.
Speaking of complacent bands--what is the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album like (anyone)? The title is a bit pompous...
Both Pearl Jam and RHCP (later output) I would put down as easy listening, alongside Daphne & Celeste and S Club 7.
Soundgarden is proper rock and I would recommend Superunknown as an album to start with followed by badmotorfinger.
The Breeders Last Splash is another one.
However, on the heavier side I would recommend Breed 77 (Cultura), Megadeth (Hangar 18), Ministry (Symbols), Rammstein (Mutter), and Sepultura (Chaos AD).
My personal favourite, though not on a guitar related note, is Ritchie Hawtin : DE9 : Transitions. I have a varied taste.
