RIP John Peel.
I've been listening to him on and off for over 15 years!
I have old tapes recorded from his shows of subsequently unheard of bands.
I remember when he played a typically obscure track to the end, then chuckled that he had played it at 33rpm instead of the intended 45rpm: "Never mind, I thought it sounded rather good like that. Maybe I'll play it at 45rpm another time to see how it was meant to sound" were Peel's words.
A sad day for music fans.

John Peel was one of my heroes. he introduced me to so much good music and i still have a huge fondness for The Fall. I too used to tape and edit his shows and some wonderful compilations by obscure bands such as "death by milkfloat" and "hagar the womb" I remember well the week in the early eighties his show as cut back from 5 nights to four. We feared it was the beginning of the end. he played his favourite sessions - the smiths, the fall, the cocteau twins etc it was a difficult time for me at the time and the dj on the radio made a difference. 2004 and he was still there. still ground breaking. still playing some awful stuff, but still a music lover, pushing the boundaries. he really did touch people's lives. RIP john, our thoughts are with his family
being new to the UK, i haven't ever listened to Peel's show. however, i've heard lots of 'Peel Session' cds and he has always been there in the background as someone who gave new bands, particularly those who might struggle to get radio exposure elsewhere, a boost. his death is a great loss to the world of rock music, not just in the UK but much further afield. just the idea of him being there was reassuring.

John Peel was quite simply the best radio DJ there has ever been. He shows up all the rest for the tossers that they are. He is completely irreplaceable. He had no ego. He was everyone's "uncle", and everyone liked him and respected him, even if they often thought the music he played was unlistenable. He listened to every tape he ever received from every bunch of nobodies, and he gave opportunities to thousands of bands. His tastes were wide, but he moved with - and ahead of the times. When bands he championed began being played on other radio programmes, he usually stopped playing them. When musical trends he had championed, such as punk, had had their day, he moved on to other interests. He always looked for what was original and interesting, and wasn't interested in records that were a takeoff of something that had been done before. His influence on music is so huge that it is unmeasurable. Nobody can ever repeat what he did, and if they were to try, no radio station would ever indulge them in the way that Peel was allowed to play what he wanted on Radio 1.
His only fault was that he was a Liverpool supporter. How many points are Liverpool behind Everton today ? Come on ye blues !
