this evening i dropped in to the supermarket on the way home, about 9pm i think. i had a couple of bags of books i really really need for my research, and i decided to take them in with me, rather than leave them unattended in the car (slightly paranoid about them, cos some are really hard to get/expensive, and some don't belong to me). okay, so i get through the checkout, wheel the trolley to my car and load in the groceries. then i park the trolley nearby, leaving my bags of books in it and drive off home.

3:15am (about 45 mins ago) i sit bolt upright in bed. somehow i know i don't have the books. not in the car of course, so tires screeching i drive back to the supermarket, which closes at midnight. no-one around, except some shelf-stackers on their break. drove up to where i'd parked earlier, not really expecting anything, but!!!!! there were my bags, untouched, unscathed. close call. would have hamstrung my research for months probably, while i tried to re-assemble my collection of books. ok, now i can sleep easy...i hope.

EDIT: what made it even worse was that i'd just bought two of the books today.

Pothead.

Why did you bring the books into the Supermarket from your car?

And how could you leave something in the trolley while emptying the items into your car one at a time?

Pothead.

as i say, i was paranoid about the books, so i took them into the supermarket. but you're right. and how i could have left them there i just don't know - one of them was a big, bright yellow bag, hardly unobvious. maybe it's my subconscious's way of telling me it wants to leave all that behind. so, yeah, i have to agree with your assessment. no more dope for me.😳😕

I once left my bag in a train. Next morning it was going back to where I had come from previous evening and I picked up my bag, untouched. Probably the reason why nobody took it is because it had nothing valuable inside, but on the other hand, since when do thieves check the bags while grabbing them?

i'd rather not say here. suffice it to say it must be doing my head in, because on the same day that i left my books in the supermarket trolley, i also left my umbrella somewhere (didn't get it back), and left my atm card at the bank (got it back). don't usually do stuff like that, but i've got deadlines coming up, and i'm kind of focussed on it. online chess is a good way to get my mind of it for a bit, since my ankle is chained to the PC anyway. hanging around the GF is less good, but if no one is moving...

intriguing. continue the elusive research. won't hound you with wild guesses. scientific, is it?
hypnotism or something satanic.
