If the fire, intense heat or falling debris didn't kill him, smoke inhalation could've, which appears to be what made him need medical attention.
Everyone says they would do the same but few would have the balls in a real situation.

@vivify saidI think the "virtue" exhibited in this case is the random factor. People endangering themselves for their own children or relatives or even for a family pet is perhaps to be, for the most part, expected.

But the "randomness" of risking one's own life for strangers creates a bit of a wow factor here and does so in all similar cases.
By contrast, the heavily armed police in Ulvade SHOULD have gone into that classroom though. Unlike the pizza guy, they had an obligation to. It was their job to be "heroic" but not the pizza guy's.
