On the ECF web site on Wednesday a post will be put up about Chess For Schools by Gerry Walsh and Peter Wilson. As this is public knowledge as of 17th December 2007, so I can tell you the bones of this post.
A company called Holloid Plastics in Basingstoke is about to start making 250,000 FREE chess sets and Boards for every state school in England. (Scale: the 1 football pitch 6 foot deep in chess kit). This project starts in March and should finish around December next year. As the ECF will need local leagues to help liaise with the schools after the sets have been drop off I have put together a "road map document"of how I believe leagues can take advantage of this.
How do I know all this, I'm sorting out the sponsorship for the Haulage so that it doesn't cause mass panic and too much work for the county associations.
Idea of size: my local leagues' (Bradford) boundry has 150 state schools in it and we are planning to have 1 liaison officer for every 3 schools to advise schools on the best way to turn each of the boards delivered into a league player inside 5 years. Each schools is getting 10 boards and sets, so thats 1500 players inside 5 years.
Why tell you lot: because if you play in an English league you will know the best activist to mention this to, and then get them to talk to me.
If sounds like alot of work, it is, but imagine if that work doesn't happen.

Is it just the northern leagues or can the midlands leagues benefit. I can pass this idea on to the coventry, birmingham, leamington and leicester leagues through my contacts if you like.

Originally posted by KeplerThanks Kepler, I had kinda put the two together. The only problem is these boards are for non fee paying schools. Do collages and Uni's charge fees? Any way, Holloid Plastics are only interested in helping people in the current state system. I will ask for both and all further education.
How about further education colleges?

Thank you for your offer I'm sure the schools will be over the moon to have two donations at once. Iron Monkey you are one fantastic person, call me as soon as possible and I'll start making the arrangements.

Originally posted by renegade hotspuroops, looks like i touched a raw nerve. don't bother to send any tennis balls - Australia has won 28 Davis Cups, more than any nation except the USA (which as 15 times the population), and 13 since 1960 - that's 13 out of 48, in a competition in which more than 100 nations compete. GB has won 9 times since the competititon began, and not at all since 1960. There are plenty of Australians playing soccer for good European clubs - it's been a relatively minor sport here (since we invented our own code of football, Australian Rules), but it's been gaining prominence over the past few years. England's only won the soccer World Cup once - in 1966 - and has never been runner-up, so you can hardly boast about your own record. Getting to the last 16 in the last World Cup was a good effort for Australia, and a sign of things to come. Look at the Athens Olympics - Australia came fourth in the medal tally behind the US, China and Russia - all countries with much larger populations, with 17G, 16S and 16B. So-called 'Great' Britain limped in tenth, with 9G, 9S and 12B. And don't get me started on swimming. Not bad for a nation of 21 million.
