Hi all- anyone interested in poker?
I played a decent game toinight- the first proper proper game for me. Texas Hold 'Em. Played against people who've been playing on and off for years, some of them very regularly, one bloke just back from Las Vegas...
Anyhoo, I cleaned up! 🙂
I always figured I'd be rubish- and probably am, but just got lucky- either that, or they're waiting for next week, when I bring the deeds to the house along.
Anyway, my question:
Can anyone recommend a site or a book on improving my poker tactics? I'd like to get good at this, as it's a bit of a thrill. I have a friend who's very good, and he recommended me a couple of books, anyway. What say the good punters of RHP??
Cheers!

Originally posted by sjegI think some of the online gaming sites allow you to play for free and offer tips on strategy...etc. There was one in particular that I keep hearing about on the radio, but I can't think of the name. I'll post it here if I think if it. In the meantime, you could probably find it (or something like it) by searching around on google.

Originally posted by sjegBooks. Doyal Brunsons book is really good. The appendix can be helpful, but his theory is "changing gears" if they are loose, tighten up. if they are tight loosen up. Hellmuths book goes into player types and how to play them. Read any thing by Caro his book of tells is intersting but lacks commentary. Then decide if you want to play live or online because they are two diffrent monsters.

Yes, the first book my poker-savvy friend lent me while I was staying with him was Doyle's Book.
I learnt lots. he's very agressive, from what I saw. But that playing loose when they're tight and vice versa is basically what I did tonight, as they were pretty tight with some exceptions, as was I-ish, but once I had won a few hands they tended to back off... and when they came to see me, I usually had something.
It's a funny old game.
My mate says Brunson's great for the basics, but his overall game is too risky. Who do you reckon he recommended me as a step up in class from old Doyle?

WTPonline.com is a good free site. Also pacificpoker.com. Addictive game.
1. Poker is a money game first. The whole idea behind it is the risk. What makes it exciting is comparable to playing chicken. How much will you risk to get what is in the pot.

You do not want to be playing for big stakes while learning, we set up games with six friends at $20 buy in, and if you lose you can buy back in.

I play at 888.com.
It has a practise room which YOU SHOULD use to start, just to get the hang of how things work online. Once you are comfortable then you will probably won't want to use it again.
Good luck
