I'm guessing an aerated unsweetened batter cooked on a hard hot surface such as a griddle. Americans wouldn't like them because they're not sweet. Mind you, honey or jam tends to get piled on ...

I wouldn't call it a stiff pancake, the texture is light because the batter is full of holes.
