i always knew it was a bad idea to pour water on grease fires, but i saw an (old, probably) episode of the Myth Busters the other day where they got a column of fire 25 ft high from pouring 8 oz of water onto burning peanut oil. really brought home just what a catastrophic move that would be, albeit one that would seem so natural to many people. i mean, fire:water - natural. am i right or am i right?

I think it would have hit 30 feet, but they didn't protect the column from wind.

i was frying some barramundi earlier today, and i thought (having watched that show) 'what if this caught fire? what would i do?' i don't have a fire extinguisher handy. i guess i would try to smother it with tea-towels or something. on another show i saw recently, there was an old guy who hand-cuffed a 'working girl' to a bed in a hotel in Asia somewhere then the hotel caught fire. he made a lame attempt to free her, but couldn't, so he just said sorry and left her there to burn. would be a horrific way to go out.

yeah, i agree. they fudge, sometimes, for the sake of stretching the show out to fill the slot, i guess.

salt or baking soda are better than the tea towel. Don't use sugar or flour, they will burn as well.

it's an Australia Day tradition - you pan-fry whole barramundi in emu oil, then go out on the balcony and wave them about as the parade goes by.
