I was in Akihabara yesterday and came across a PSP camera for sale.
I'm an avid PSP user, but this was the first I had heard of a PSP camera. Is anyone out there familiar with this and possibly know how well they work?

Sony released the camera attachment in Japan a few months ago so they're probably coming out in Europe and the US about now.

I haven't heard much about them since I read the original review but they were pretty rubbish. They only had about 1.3 MP so you'd be far better off just taking pictures with the phone on your camera, let alone an actual digital one. Hopefully Sony will have the sense to bring out at least a 3 MP one to meet industry standards!

1.3 ain't too great. Maybe that's why I didn't hear about it coming out. There's usually a ton of ads and hoopla for new stuff like this. I didn't hear anything about it. No one even seemed very interested in it at the store.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. Taking pictures with the PSP isn't ideal for most people anyway.

Here is what someone said on a review site (http://www.pspcrazy.com/index.php?page=Story&id=1166):

What the heck is wrong with you all? First off, this not meant to be a digital camera replacement, it is the equivalent of a webcam, which all run at such low resolutions so that video can be sent via internet at a fast speed. This is the eye toy on the psp, for those of you who didnt know, the regular eyetoy for ps2 probably has the exact same if not similar resolution. To add to all of your uneducated low res means crappy shots comments, the psp screen is something around 600 by 400 i think, which means that guess what, every shot you take with this camera will look just great on your psp screen, resolution wise that is. While this might not be a must have why dont you all consider what it will be used for, Not one photographer who knows what they are doing would use a psp to take pictures, this camera is for video chats, which if you can sit down at a starbucks, and have a video conference with your friend halfway around the world all from your psp, that is pretty freaking sweet. jeesh, how old are you all?

What an idiot!

As it says on that comment page, if it's the "Eye Toy" for the PSP then why didn't Sony call it that! How the hell are you supposed to play Eye Toy games on a hand-held conslole?! Does it pick up the movement of your eyebrows or something! Also, the video conferencing idea is complete rubbish. The microphone attachment for the PSP (the Talkman which isn't even out in Europe yet) fits into the same slot as the camera so you can only use one at a time. Not to mention the drain on battery power the combined use of Wireless Connection + Camera + Microphone would cause or the low connection speed you'd get doing it!

No point in having more resolution than the screen now is there. This whole camera megapixel debate over cameras is even more misleading that the MHz race for CPUs. 3.2MP is fine for magazine quality standard photo size prints. You only need more than that if you intend to print big or you like to cut off bits of your photo. 1.2MP is fine for the web.
