@moonbus saidMaybe he never wanted to be King, maybe he preferred to be without those responsibilities and Mrs Simpson was his chance to live another kind of life, knowing she would never have been accepted by Queen Elizabeth. Just a thought.
Edward did not have that luxury.
@torunn saidI believe Edward did not want to be king, with or without Wallis Simpson. Simpson was married when she met Edward, but Edward was not. The 'corporation' would not have let him marry an American divorcee; that was out of bounds. Hence, his decision to abdicate and retire to another country. It was not Elizabeth's decision; she wasn't queen then.

The case of Charles and Camilla is slightly different, as she was still married to Parker Bowles, and Charles was married to Dianna, when Camilla and Charles became romantically involved. To have split up both marriages so Charles could marry Camilla would have been beyond the pale.
@torunn saidThe “new” Edward seems, from where I am seated, to to shun any real publicity but then I guess being so far down on the Totem Pole, he really is an afterthought.🤔

@moonbus saidIsn't that what happened anyway?

Let's say Fate stepped in, just to avoid stepping on any British snowflake toes by placing blame.
