I was sort of duped into buying an academic version of MS expression 3, a website building software set, the question is this: with millions of websites, how could MS track one odd website that was built with academic software? Is there something in the code that announces it to those in the know, that it came from an academic version? Thanks for your help on this.
Originally posted by sonhouseIt is possible but highly unlikely that they would bother doing it.

Show me and page you've built using the software and I'll tell you if there's any form of tracking on it.
Originally posted by Daemon SinGreat, I'll do that, not right now but when I get something going, I'll link it. Thanks. I sort of thought it would be difficult to trace unless there was some weasily code snuck in only the academic version.

Originally posted by sonhouseIt would be very easy for them to do, but they probably wouldn't. Anyone who has anything more than a few weeks worth of HTML knowledge would pick this up.

Originally posted by CrowleyAre you saying there IS buried code in the academic version? If so, can it deleted? Here is the Email when I asked them why the software was so cheap compared to the full price: I asked them specifically if this was academic software or was it some kind of chinaware, here is the answer:

This is the full version sold at an academic discount price. You must meet
the academic requirements on our website to qualify for the software.

Does that not sound like it is a 'full' version? A bit of deceptive advertising if you ask me. I think one of the problems with academic software in general is you cannot upgrade to the next level if you want, you have to buy another academic version of the next level. I would not have purchased this product if I had known it truly was an academic version. On the other hand, if there is not much chance of MS catching on, I may keep it. Thus my dilemma.
Originally posted by sonhouseI actually qualify for academic MS products and have used dozens of titles over the years (although not specicially Expression) and I've never seen anything in the output that was trackable.
Anyone else have any opinions on this, also, has anyone here actually built a website using MS Expressions 3 or other versions?
One thing to check on the software you bought. All the academic ones come with a holographic sticker of authenticity. If you didn't get that sticker then you may have purchased a pirated copy. If yours does have the sticker, then I wouldn't worry about it.
Originally posted by sbacatYes, it does have a hologram. Is that a great reassurance? I thought the Chinese pirates could do the hologram as well. I guess if it activates, there shouldn't be a problem, eh. Or are you saying if it is a pirate copy, it won't activate?

I guess then if it does activate, it stands to reason it was not a pirate copy.
Have you built a website for commercial purposes using academic software? You can PM me the answer if you don't want to reveal that info here. Thanks for your response.

I can not believe you're so low as to say that!
edit: Sorry pal, I posted to the wrong poster. This is not the uid I am trolling for. 😳
