What is going on with the ratings? I have challenged players in my rating range. After 3 moves, when I cannot delete the game, the ratings of these players goes up 200 or more points. Thier rating never moves up until three moves.
This happened with Luck. It happened with SonicDeathMonk3y.
However, the interesting game was game number 259615. OkeePokee named the game as 1200 and under. One day later he has a rating of 1506.

I'll play anyone, but I do not bother players that are out of my skill. I don't want to waist there time. Why do these players take up a lower player's time.

Something is wrong with the ratings. I find it hard to believe a player can move up 200 points in one day.
I suspect what you are experiencing is the fairly new "provisional rating system." If your opponent has less than 20 rated games completed their "provisional" rating makes some drastic changes because of a different formula being used.
The idea is that after completing 20 rated games this new system will have placed their rating fairly close to what it should be.
So if you start playing a game against someone with less than 20 games and if they complete a game against someone else during this time, you will see a major change in their rating. I don't know how the formula works in awarding rating points when a provisional rated player completes a game against an "established rated" player.
In the case where your opponent has more than 20 games completed, the only explanation I can offer is that they are completing numerous other games while your game is in progress, which would cause their rating to change more than what you would expect.
These explanations are only a 'guess' on my part, Daniel. Hope it helps.

Thanks Marc,
I thought the low number of games might be the reason. However, there are players that have more than 20 games when this happens. It wasn't like that in the begining of this site. I've been on this site for quite a while. I was surprised to see that I have made less than 8000 moves. I am surprised that players that have been on a year or less can make 10,000 moves or more. I didn't look at your number of moves, so I'm sure you will know I am not talking about you.

I've never played someone witha provisional rating, so can someone answer me this - how would my rating be effected by playing someone with a provisional rating? for example, if a provisional player has won 1 game against a 1200 player his rating jumps to 1600(?), but only temporarily. If I then play the next game against them & win would my score be adjusted as if they really were rated 1600? If so, it doesn't sound right.
Originally posted by belgianfreakIf you play someone who has played fewer than five games then their rating is treated as 1200 for your calculation.

You receive or lose half the points you normally would playing anyone who has played fewer than 20 games.
