Anyone know of some cheap HD recording software that can feed into Cakewalk files and what kind of decent I/O card to use, USB2? firewire? kind of interface. At home I use an RME hammerfal Digiface but thats on a full PC, want something a lot more compact, maybe something with built in mike preamps and such. Two channel would be fine for something like this since I would just be recording in a hotel room or in the lobby of a hotel, something like that and could theoretically record in a forest if I wanted to because the laptop would have its battery at least for a few hours. Any thoughts?

My dad is looking for the same thing, something easy to use that is compact. If you ever find one ...

Your dad wants to record the band on the road? If so it would seem you would need a lot of mike preamps, with what, 8 of you playing at once it would not sound very balanced to use just one or two mikes.
I started to build my dream on the road system, used a cpu from a company called Transmeta, they simulate a Pentium in software! So I paid 800 bucks for the card, it was the size of a postcard and I had an LCD screen modified to contain that and HD but the stupid CPU card was DOA. I sent it back and got my money back, and bought a Dell PC instead and now that we have a laptop I want to try again.

There is usually 5 of us playing at one time, and we usually only have 1-3 mic, (Omini Mics) What were trying to do is when we go ou tour, record is record every concert to the laptop, and at the end of the tour, pick out the best songs, and put it on a CD or something.

Dad bought a $700.00 dollor program (I forget the name of it) but it is way to complicated for me to want to learn it.

That probably would be Cubase, Sonar, or propellerhead, they are all in that price range. For your purpose, you don't need something that complicated because you would take the basic recordings home or to a studio to be enhanced and mixed down anyway so all you need is the basic recording system. My problem is finding an I/O box that easily interfaces to a laptop, maybe USB2 port or firewire.

I use Sonar and I know how you feel. The best one and the least user friendly is called Protools, it has more features than you can shake a stick at and is extremely expensive, way too much moolah for the average joe. I saw a few music studio sets at Best Buy but first you need a good I/O box to get music into and out of the laptop. The little mike input plug is one way but the sound would not be as good as a real I/O box like Layla or Hammerfall. I don't want to use one that plugs into the card slot, hoping to find one that just connects with USB or firewire.
