Any help on the following will be greatly appreciated!
Am running XP Pro, monitor is a Hitachi CML174SXW B, with the oh-so-wonderful-maybe-not-can-you-spot-the-sarcasm GeForce4 MX 440 graphics card. I've got the latest (61.76) Nvidia drivers installed, and resolution set to 1280x1024.
For some reason the monitor's refresh rate has become stuck at 60Hz. I've researched the issue a little and it appears that this can be a problem with Nvidia cards and Win2k/XP. The newer Nvidia drivers do offer an override refresh rate option but when going into this I still only get the option to override it to just 60Hz.
I think this started happening when I had a problem with DirectPlay8 - this problem was found when I was failing to connect via directIP to play a certain game online with a friend (realising the cause of that problem took ages to track down!!). I rolled back the directx drivers and installed directx 9. This did the trick in terms of that game, but I think it's been since then that I've been stuck on 60Hz. May not be, but the times seem to tie up.
The flickering on the monitor is not a nice sight to behold at the mo. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!

try reducing the colour depth: you may find that more refresh rates open up.
If that doesn't work, I'd switch to using WinXP's own monitor driver rather than the monitor specific one. That worked for my work PC (still using win2000, but it had a similar problem)
I'm wondering if there is a possible issue with the GeForce4 MX 440 card and directx 9. I thought I had directx 9 before the shenanigans regarding DirectPlay but maybe I didn't. I'll perhaps try reinstalling directx 9.
Have been thinking of purchasing a new graphics card for some months now (Far Cry and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow here I come) - presumably this, albeit an extreme measure, would solve the refresh rate problem?
Originally posted by ToeOne quick google brings this up -
there's also an upgrade to directx 9b on windows.com
Plus a known issue with directX9 and and graphics cards that support TV in/out in PAL format (but I don't recall that messing up the refresh rate)
seems you're prob on your own on this one till some more svvy RHPer comes along
Good luck!

It may help.

Prolific thanks to Toe, Russ and chomper. The reinstall of directx 9 didn't help (mebbe I was doing something wrong). Tried that prog. Russ and it didn't help. Went back into the nvidia driver settings and actually found a way to enter in a non-standard refresh rate, albeit not in the place called "Refresh Rate Override". Ho hum, got there in the end. It's now on 75Hz and considerably less flickery.
Something's still wrong somewhere as running dxdiag shows that there are problems in the registry regarding directx. Just says to reinstall directx 9 but when I do....same thing. [Output below]

The "problems" don't seem to be manifesting themself in any noticeable way though so, I guess I'll just pretend there not there for now!

Well done on getting anywhere with this type of problem: they are always nightmarish
