Basically, we need to protect all the data on the site.
Say something terrible happens (i.e. server breaks), we need to restore the site to a very recent state. Hence, a 4 times-a-day back up. (Just to be safe)
We hoped to remove the downtime, but in fact we have just reduced it (we now have a faster server - but it does seem to be getting worked just as hard when it is not in a 'down for maintenance' state.)
