What about the Rivals, Level 1, 2, 3 and 4...they have high ratings, but haven't played any games... Are they computers or something? I red something about it on the FAQ. (Rival Online)

nope, i haven't-but i think you can download rival chess from somehwere on the site, if my memory serves me right (pawn stars only though...)
But if you want the full version you have to register and pay something.

Rival is free to download.
In the early first months of the site, it was possible to play Rival online - but it really worked our server, and kind of went against the community feel of the site (playing with one self) - so we scrapped it.
One day it may return, but not until we have dedicated server for such a purpose.

Not just that, it is a downloadable freeware chess program written (I believe) by Russ and/or Chris.

The difference is that if you download it and decide you like it, you are expected to purchase a registered copy of the program. That is not the same thing as freeware.

Actually, I have never been sure of the distinction between shareware and freeware.
