Okay so it didn't lighten the mood, but there it is anyway.

All around me are familiar faces...
worn out places, worn out faces.
Bright and early for their daily races...
    going nowhere, going nowhere.
Their tears are filling up their glasses...
    no expression, no expression.
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow...

Children waiting for the day, they feel good...
    happy birthday, happy birthday.
Made to feel the way, that every child should...
sit and listen, sit and listen.
Went to school and I was very nervous...
no one knew me, no one knew me.
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson...
look right through me, look right through me.

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believin' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believin' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

    You've Got a Friend

    When you're down and troubled,
And you need some love and care,
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me,
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night.

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
    Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
    And I'll be there
    You've got a friend

If the sky above you grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, running, yeah, yeah, to see you again
    Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
    And I'll be there
And I'll be there, yes I will...

    Do what you wanna
    Do what you will
    Just don't mess up

'N when you pay the bill
    Kindly leave a little tip
And help the next poor sucker

I'm getting closer to my home.

Grand funk, the story is basically that you are or were the captain of the ship. We built boats out of wood and sailed the oceans! This is so amazing. But that refrain, I'm getting closer, feels like applicable to life in general. We are going to die but that isn't what is important. We move, we go, and we won't stop.

    I'm high, and not sorry.

    Once inside a woman's heart
A man must keep his head
    Heaven opens up the door
    Where angels fear to tread
Some men go crazy, some men go slow
Some men go just where they want
    Some men never go

David Byrne, now there's a philosopher, lyrics too numerous to impart in full, but...

    'It's hard to imagine
    That nothing at all
    Could be so exciting
    Could be this much fun.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.'

'We're on a road to nowhere.'

And so on...Good stuff if your feeling existential...

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
    It don't matter, anyhow
And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm traveling on

Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
    That light I never knowed
And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talking anyway

So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
    Like you never done before
It ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinking and a-wond'rin' walking down the road
    I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul

Don't think twice, it's all right

    So long honey, babe
    Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time

But don't think twice, it's all right
