Okay, now that I finally figured out what you're on about here, do you have any inside information as to what exactly it represents?

For example, I've been on this site for 15 years now, but I only show "13 years" of playing chess. What is the algorithm for figuring this? Maybe Russ will step in and clue us in.

AFAICT it's how long you've been playing without an interruption of longer than a year.

For example, I've been here since early 2007, but I didn't play at all in 2013, so now I count as having played for 4 years consecutively.

Russ has left some information about how it works in this thread.

But, how do you 'know' you're getting your 'ten-year' next month? What is your metric for determining this?

probably based on the month and year he joined
next month marks his tenth year on this site
