I've just noticed whilst going through the game history of one of my games here, that when I promoted my pawn to a queen, the queen disappeared from the taken pieces at the bottom of the game board. Does this mean that if I promote another pawn, I can't promote it to a queen, and that I can only promote a it to a piece that I have already had taken from me?

Since you are a seasoned poster:
* take it to help
*take it to chess only
and the answer is:
You may promote to any piece you want. There are examples where it is better to promote to a Knight, if you need examples post in the Chess only forum.
I just thought that they had changed the rules for a minute.
Originally posted by jimslyp69So, when you play OTB and promote a pawn, don't you take the previously-taken queen and put it back on the board? Or do you go fashion another queen out of plastic to put in instead? Does this limit the number of queens you can have in OTB play? We always used an upside-down rook for a second queen.

You know the rules of chess. You know that what's off the board isn't nearly as important as what's on the board.

A man perplexed by a missing chess piece, posing a question in a forum full of jerks. He isn't aware of the fact, he is about to be torn to bits, and those bits will become other chess pieces. An ironic twist to a never ending battle, in the Zugzwang Zone.

A man perplexed by a missing chess piece, posing a question ina forum full of jerks. A fact he is fully aware of having acted the jerk part in earlier times....that's Zugzwang!

Edit: Looking is the first sign of obsession! 😏
