I want to save some videos from youtube. Sites such as savemedia ask me to install their downloader, which looks well dodgy to me. Am I right to assume it's dodgy?

Obviously, downloading videos from Youtube may go against their T&C's, one would have to investigate.

But if one were to use Firefox and then install the download helper:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/

One could in fact do what you request.
