Kirk,
I, too, have been thinking about supporting a chess club for children...I subsitute teach, and the kids always see me playing RHP and start talking about how cool chess is and how they play with other kids around the world...how refreshing!
The book I'd use to start (it is my first chess book) is:
Start Playing Chess
By Rosalyn B. Katz
perhaps too simplistic? perhaps, but I think it's a good base for children 6-10
Good luck and remember...education and advizing doesn't always give instant gratification! 🙂 Okay, well there are a few exceptions...
Cheers,
Ala

My kids' school has asked me to coach the chess club. They have never had one before. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? I want it to be fun at this stage. Also any very beginning books to recommend would be appreciated. What are some ways you would structure an hour after school with this? Thanks. Kirk
Thanks, everyone. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll probably say something like, "OK, class, for your homework this week I want all of you to log on to www.redhotpawn.com. I want you addicted to this site. Tell your parents I said it was OK to stay on the internet all the time. You may not learn how to spell, but you will learn philosophy and other useless information (sorry, Bennett, I couldn't resist!)." 😉 Kirk
