Yes, I noticed. Personally I prefer "xyr" (his/her) and "xym" (him/her), but that's probably mostly because that's what I am used to.

But it's used when gender is unknown, which was the case. So, unless you think there's something wrong with he that makes no sense.

It's ambiguous. For example, what if you have several people; some women and some men. If you want to refer to one of them and you say "he" it could imply a male to some people which can be confusing.

Plus it's more respectful to women to use gender neutral terms in my opinion.
