    If we go for the semiotics we have:

    The nice Change from wezir to Queen. (probably due to medevial thoughts on romantics.

    The Change from elephant to rook to Castle (in German Turm: Tower)

    There is a nice socail comment to have a White and a black Bishop (when you take into account European meaning of black and White ion regard to Religion, for japanese e.g. this is different).
