"He/she" or "(s)he" is used when you don't know the sex of someone. There are several pronouns for intersexed people; I use "xe" because that's what the only intersexed person I know uses. "He/she" doesn't include intersexed people, so "he/she/xe" would be more inclusive.

Still clear as mud?
Thanks for the lesson in in "letters". Now can you explain the meaning of the acronym XE😛

It's not an acronym, as far as I know. It's an intersexed pronoun.

I'm familiar with the pronouns he and she but not xe so I looked it up in my dictionary and it appears that your explanation is without merit.Unless of course this is a new word that has entered the English lexicon and my dictionary is out of date.

As I said, there are several pronouns used for intersexed people, "xe" is just one of them, and it's not used widely. None of them is "official", so you won't find them in a dictionary.

They describe it as "gender-neutral", which is one possible use of it. In the mailing list in which I got to know the term, it's used both to refer to an intersexed person, and to refer to a person of unknown sex, or whose sex you don't want to reveal.

A plausible explanation I guess but don't you think that maybe xy or yx might have been a better alternative?

We were talking about sex. We were talking about how to refer to an intersexed person, or how to refer to a person whose sex you don't know.

No. "Xy" would be a good alternative for "he", though. 😉

No, it looks to me as you were talking about how to refer to intersexed people in text (or how to refer to people in a gender-unspecific sense). I would be more interested in learning about intersexed people. What does it mean to be intersexed? Perhaps I am the only one here who doesn't know?

Anyway, I googled and found at least three interesting links which may be readworthy to someone else as well. I thought intersexed was something like transsexual or transgendered, but how wrong I was. 🙂

Here's the homepage of Jim Sinclair, the intersexed person I mentioned earlier: http://web.syr.edu/~jisincla/
Scroll down for xyr stuff about intersexuality. But the rest of the page is worth reading, too.

Yes indeed I also thought that, I haven't looked at the links you left, but from your reaction, I guess intersexed means someone between the 2 genders? or perhaps having attributes of both genders? whereas a transexual could be correctly called a he or she because they are that gender (no offence meant to anyone I'm just getting my head aropund it).

From Jim's page: "The term 'intersexed' refers to atypical differentiation of the sexual organs. It describes an anatomic condition that a person is born with. It does not refer to any form of sexual behavior or personal lifestyle."
