Does it really matter? As far as I know set piece games don't affect ones win/loss record, so the player is just wasting his own time.

everybody can see the position at which the game starts, so why not. If youi accept the game, you also accept the position. Second thing is that games that don't start from the normal position are all not rated. Only in tournaments these games are rated.

Non rated games do affect your win/loss record, so I think set piece games are too, but I am not sure about this.

Really? Wouldn't this discourage people playing out lost positions with anyone for practice? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Non-rated games affect your win/loss record, but set games don't (to my understanding).

Set piece games do not affect your won/loss record, nor do they affect your rating. I have played several of them.

Set piece games do affect your win-loss record. I have played several with ElvenDreamGirl to help her with different endgame themes, and I vividly remember them changing my win-loss record. Not that I mind; my primary reason for being here is to continually improve my chess, not my win-loss totals.

Are you sure? Because that is not what I understood, nor experienced. I have 3 to 5 setup games running on average, most of which I lose (because they are training/coaching games) and have never seen effect on my stats.
