I'm sitting here tonight in a profoundly sad mood. Boo hoo. Anyway as I often do when I'm in a rather crappy mood, I dug out my book of inspirational writings I've collected or written over the years. I came across one I wrote 5 years ago and it reflected my current feelings of loss. I know there are others who are experiencing or have experienced great losses in your lives. Mabye you will understand.
Since You Went Away
The air is not as crisp today,
yet the wind is bitter cold.
There's a sadness all about me,
as I walk along the road.
I try to put a smile on,
as people pass me by.
A closer look would show them
the tears I want to cry.
The grass is somehow duller,
the sky's a murky grey.
Nothing seems the way it should,
since you went away.
The flutter in my heart's still here,
it has nowhere to go.
With you is where it wants to be,
Impossible I know.
Still the faded sun will set,
in the morning it will rise.
I would trade it in a heartbeat
just to gaze into your eyes.
You're what made life beautiful,
you'd brighten up each day.
Everything is darker now
since you went away.
The flowers all seem wilted,
the birds don't want to sing.
If only I could fly to you
on the feather of a wing.
Each day that lay before me
a new challenge will await.
I need to overcome the loss
of flirting with my fate.
Dreams of passion fill my nights,
in my dreams is where you'll stay.
Even in my dreams I cry,
since you went away.
N.Porter/May 2000
Looking back helps me to remember other times in my life where I have felt exteme pain or loss and more importantly how that pain didn't last forever. So even though I feel a bit down at the moment, by looking back I can see the light and know that like all things in life, this too will pass. Sorry if I've bummed anyone out, not my intent.
It's a beautiful poem, Mokko.
Eh...here, an ancient Sufi story...
A king once had a magician who gave him a special ring, in which was encoded a very special message. The magician said to the king, "only consult the message when all seems truly hopeless. Do not use it before then."
The king forgot about the message, and eventually the old magician died. The king ruled happily over his land for a long time. But one day, invaders arrived from far away, and they gradually over-ran his kingdom. They destroyed his land, and killed many of his people. They got closer and closer to his castle, and eventually breached its walls. The king tried to flee along with his personal guard. The invaders chased him, caught up to him, and killed his personal guard. Desperately trying to flee, the king jumped off his horse and ran to the edge of a cliff. He dangled over the edge on a vine...and saw that it was too far to the ground to jump.
It was truly a hopeless situation...and the invaders were almost on top of him. Death was certain.
Suddenly the king remembered the old magician, and his message, to be used only in the most hopeless situation. Surely this qualified, he thought.
He opened his ring, and read the message. It said, "this too shall pass."

Give your kids a long hug and the world will seem a little less dark.
