It might be somewhere on the site or it might be a worldwide
recognised system but I need an answer

How does ANY game affect the participating players ratings ?

Mislead gave you instructions for reaching that answer on the site, since it is a frequently asked
question.
If that wasn't clear enough then the URL is:
http://www.redhotpawn.com/help/popuphelp.php?section=faq#8
Read.
If you don't want to read, then in oh so broad terms:
If you win a game, your rating goes up.
If you lose a game your rating goes down.
if you draw, your rating goes up, down, or remains the same dependent on the rating of your
opponent.

If you go to the above url, one formula is apparently wrong:
The following:
New Rating = Old Rating + K * (1 - Win Expectancy)

Should be :
New Rating = Old Rating + K * (R - Win Expectancy)
where R=1 if you win, R=0 if you lose and R=1/2 if you draw.

It's not wrong as such, just not the clearest way of stating matters.

I'm not sure if the R=0.5 for draw is implemented or not. The score
may just stay the same. Chris?

And please remember that scores in the rear view mirror are larger
than they appear to be.

The 0.5 seems to be in the calculations; my rating has shifted slightly
after draws.
Without that choice of 1,0,or 1/2 in the formula then according to
what's posted in the FAQ, your ratings would just go up -regardless of
whether you won or lost the game.
Hmm. Actually, I think I'd prefer it that way!
