Live frugal, eat lots of soups and casseroles that you make yourself. Bread and rice are both cheap and filling, bread is better for you. Eggs are an excellent cheap source of protein. Make lots of meals out of the best foods you can get for cheap, pay attention to dietary concerns, don't malnourish yourself, cook your own food (or get someone in your family to do it), and watch for any sales or exceptoinally good deals in your local grocery stores and use these for variety in your diet. Make sure to eat fruit. Sadly, for a family of 5 I would estimate at lesat $150, and that is living really cheap, per week, although this could be much more depending on where you live.

For spices, oregano, mint, and many others can be grown in a window or something, just don't buy them pre-potted, that is a ripoff, but seeds.

Scroll down to find shopping lists and eating plans - one for about $45/week and the other for about $70/week. As you might guess, the second option offers more variety and so would be healthier overall.
