Carling Cup Semifinal cancelled due to "extreme" weather

And from the Telegraph:

Forecasters warned that the snow and arctic conditions are set to continue into the weekend, while southern England is braced to be the “crucible” of the severe weather later today.

“Commuters and holidaymakers faced travel chaos as snow and ice shut airports, caused gridlock on the roads and led to scores of delayed and cancelled rail services.

Thousands of children were sent home as schools across Scotland and northern England were forced to close amid sub-zero temperatures.

We could see up to 15cm (6ins) or more in some parts of Hampshire and Dorset.”

Stephen Davenport, senior meteorologist at MeteoGroup, added: "So entrenched is this cold-weather pattern that it seems only a major upheaval in the atmosphere will bring a return to something milder.

"Should conditions continue in a similar vein then by March we might just be looking back at one of the coldest winters of the last 100 years."

Meanwhile, supermarkets saw a surge in panic buying as shoppers stocked up on essential items, as well as antifreeze products, boots and thermal underwear.

Temperatures fell beyond 14F (-10C) in parts of Britain overnight, with no end in sight to the freezing weather.

The lowest temperature was recorded in Strathallan in Scotland where the mercury plunged to 13.82F (-10.1C). Despite most of England did not see quite such extreme temperatures, Bournemouth came a close second at 14F (-10C). "

Do you know what we call that in this part of the world?

Great football weather.

You should have seen last year here in London.

It snowed for one day and they closed all schools for two days (the forecasts were for snow on the second day as well), tube lines closed, buses were rare and there were car crashes all around. Apparently, nobody here as ever heard of winter tyres or of windscreen cleaning liquid that doesn't freeze. 😕

The best part is that it was sunny on the second day, but everything was already planned to be closed so schools remained shut and so on. Here they've circulated an email warning us to "avoid trips between buildings to minimize snow-related injuries". 😵

Edit - To be fair, had this happened in Portugal it would be CHAOS.

Every time we have a snowfall in Britain it's chaos...the councils don't grit the roads in time, and no-one is ever prepared for it.
You wouldn't believe this was the 21st century, it's ridiculous.

We've had about 6 inches of snow, and although we've managed to clear the cul-de-sac where I live, it was fairly pointless as all the major roads are gridlocked!

I hope everyone's okay and that no one died in the arctic blizzard.

It's not ridiculous, it's the result of a cost-benefit analysis.

We could easily have an infrastructure that could cope with this sort of weather. It would cost a lot more. If we had weather like this frequently it would be worth it. At the moment, it isn't.

no, unfortunately my grandad's still alive 😞

fingers crossed for tomorrow.

re the two games being propounded, it really is pathetic. what's the point of having under soil heating if you're just going to cancel a match over fears for 'fans safety' outside the ground after a few cm's of snow?

At the moment, no airport in London is functioning. The cost for this must be astronomical, even if just for 2 days a year. I'm really not sure if it's a good cost-effective decision.

2 days stoppage in London, must be equivalent to what? 60 days stoppage of Bratislava? Sure, the cost to keep London running would also be much higher, but it would be good to see a report about this.
