ok i cant believe im even getting in to this as i believed that ALL of this has been common knowledge for at least a decade... but anyway ...

Crowley's advice is sound - IF you need to rub the cd, then do so from the center out to the edge. rubbing in a cirlular motion can cause any small pieces of grit to scratch the disc (even if you use a "fluffy towel"😉. any scratches which almost follow the track of the disc can cause the reading head problems, as it tries to read the scrath instead of the data track. if the scratches run from the center to the edge then the head just ignores it (mostly).

... and as he says, pixels are what are supposed to be seen on screen - its what makes up the picture. i presume arrakis is describing the "blocky" effect which can occur if the disc or reading head is dirty, or if the head is out of alignment.
